The technical advice and expertise of the Johnstone’s Trade colour advisory department has helped to transform a stunning Grade II Listed property in Harrogate as part of an award-winning redecoration project.

The large Georgian building, built in 1786, was neglected for years and was in desperate need of repair when the current owners bought the property to live in. It has now been lovingly restored using hundreds of litres of Johnstone’s Trade’s paint.

It was vital that an appropriate colour scheme was used to ensure the interior remained in keeping both with the history of the building and its residential use. Colour and specification experts from the PPG Extra team were enlisted to provide technical guidance throughout, and made several visits to the property to provide advice to the decorator and the homeowner throughout the process.

Restoring and redecorating the building involved months of painstaking preparation, by father and son team Chris Green Painter and Decorators, and included stripping away hundreds of years’ worth of wallpaper. The Harrogate-based team won the Johnstone’s Painter of the Year, Supreme Winner 2013 accolade for their work on this project after impressing judges with the transformation.

Johnstone’s Joncryl Water Based Primer Undercoat was first used to create a perfectly smooth, flawless surface. Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt, Acrylic Satin and Acrylic Eggshell, which all have all been formulated to provide a durable finish, were used to complete the look and ensure the house will remain in a pristine condition for years to come.

Chris Green, who was also ‘very highly commended’ at the PDA Awards for his work on this project, said: “This was a challenging project, but seeing the finished result and knowing how pleased the client was in the end made it all worth it. The help and advice the PPG Extra team gave during the project was invaluable. Ensuring an appropriate colour scheme was used throughout the entire house was important, not just to reflect the period and style of the house, but also to create a homely, inviting space for the homeowners.”

The homeowner said: “We were impressed with Chris’s close and constructive working relationship with Johnstone’s Trade. We felt that he was given, and accepted, the best technical and design advice, which is apparent in both the quality and the practicality of all the paints he used.”
